Can I have both Medicare Advantage and a Supplement?

No — you can't use a Medicare Supplement with a Medicare Advantage plan. A Supplement only works with Original Medicare. You choose one path or the other: Original Medicare with a Supplement (plus a Part D drug plan), or a Medicare Advantage plan that bundles everything together.

Why they don't combine

A Medicare Supplement is designed to pay the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare leaves behind. A Medicare Advantage plan replaces how you receive your benefits — it has its own copays and out-of-pocket maximum, so there are no Original Medicare gaps for a Supplement to fill. It's also against the rules for an agent to sell you a Medigap policy if you're in an Advantage plan.

The two paths

So you're really choosing between two complete approaches:

  • Original Medicare + Supplement + Part D — predictable costs, no networks, any doctor that accepts Medicare; a higher monthly premium.
  • Medicare Advantage — usually low premium, drug coverage and extras built in, a yearly out-of-pocket cap; a provider network and sometimes referrals.

Neither is "better" universally — it depends on your budget, your doctors, how much you travel, and how predictable you want your costs to be. A licensed agent can compare both for your situation at no cost.

Common questions

Can I have both Medicare Advantage and a Supplement? FAQ

Can I have Medicare Advantage and a Part D plan?
Usually you don't need a separate Part D plan with Medicare Advantage, because most Advantage plans include drug coverage. Adding a standalone Part D plan to most Advantage plans can even disenroll you.
Which path is better for me?
It depends on whether you value provider freedom and predictable costs (Supplement) or low premiums with built-in extras and a cap (Advantage). Comparing both side by side is the best way to decide.
